WMU grad with ties to local lawmakers among Virginia shooting victims

Matt Mika, who has served several local lawmakers, was shot four to five times during practice for the upcoming congressional baseball game.

Mika, who previously worked on Capitol Hill for two MI congressmen, is the director of government relations in the Washington office of Tyson Foods. He says Mika was taken to a hospital and that the company is awaiting word on his condition. The attack also injured Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise (R-Jefferson), a Congressional aide and two Capitol police officers.

A Tyson Foods employee was shot at a baseball field Wednesday morning (June 14) in Alexandria, Virginia. Scalise and other members of Congress were in the middle of a Congressional baseball practice.

- Matthew Mika, a lobbyist for Arkansas-based Tyson Foods Inc and former staffer for two former Republican representatives, was shot in the chest, according to witness Senator Jeff Flake.

According to The Record Courier , Heintz was found "unresponsive" shortly after 9:00 a.m. and was pronounced dead at 11:34 a.m. The two-star recruit from Kenton, Ohio, had dreams of playing Division 1 college football, but they were cut short tragically.

Mika is a Michigan native and former staff member of Michigan Congressman Tim Walberg and Dave Camp. He is now a lobbyist with Tyson Foods, CNN reports.

Mika's family issued a statement indicating that they were traveling to Washington, be with him, and asked the media to respect their privacy.

"Matt Mika, one of the guys who helps us, is here at the hospital", Brady told the Post. He later earned a master's in public administration and public policy from Western Michigan University in 2004, according to his LinkedIn profile. "Baseball is one of his great passions", Mika's family said in the statement, "and he has always loved the Congressional team".
