There's been at least 1 mass shooting every month this year

Steve Scalise, House Majority Whip who was shot Wednesday during a congressional baseball practice, is undergoing his third surgery Thursday.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday, adding that he also had visited a wounded Capitol Police officer at the hospital. "He's a great fighter and he's going to be okay, we hope".

Trump ended his remarks on Scalise by noting his shooting may have the silver lining of ending divides in American politics: "And Steve in his own way", Trump said, "may have brought some unity to our long divided country".

"I know the political climate has reached a boiling point across this country, but most people - whether we like their agenda or not - enter the arena to try to make better or do what they perceive it takes to make it better".

Donnelly and other Democrats were practicing in D.C. for a charity baseball game against Republicans when they heard of an attack on GOP congressmen in Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise remained in critical condition early Thursday morning, according to officials at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the Washington Post reported.

The President praised Mr. Scalise as "a very good friend" and "a patriot", telling the legislator he had "not just the prayers of the entire city behind you, but the entire nation and frankly the entire world".

"He's in some trouble", Trump continued.

Sen. Rand Paul, who was among the lawmakers at the scene, said on MSNBC that the only reason Capitol Police were there was because Scalise is a House leader.

Trump expresses more frustration over Russia investigation
Once Comey was sacked , the Department of Justice appointed Mueller as special counsel to act as an independent investigator. Trump's questions are best directed at his Department of Justice, who have the power to investigate Clinton.

Two sources also say at least one Capitol Police officer was shot.

Members of Congress were practicing for a game that was scheduled for Thursday night at Nationals Park.

Republican Rep. Gregg Harper of MS gaveled in the session on Thursday, and Rep. Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania opened the morning speeches.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is lashing out at "sanctimonious" Republicans - including some in Congress - who are suggesting vitriolic political rhetoric from the left may be partially to blame for the shooting that wounded GOP Congressman Steve Scalise. The popular and gregarious lawmaker is known for his love of baseball and handed out commemorative bats when he secured the job of House whip several years ago.

Hodgkinson has been in the area since March, living out of his van, said local FBI Special Agent In Charge Tim Slater. "If you belong to the gym, they think 'well, that's a perk you shouldn't have, '" said Rep. Mike Doyle of Pennsylvania, the manager of the Democratic team.

Pence said he and his wife, Karen, were praying for Scalise and all the injured and their families, as is America.

The man's apparent Facebook page included strong criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

"It will be 'Play Ball!' tomorrow night at 7:05", said Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, the longtime manager of the GOP squad.

While top lawmakers, including Scalise, have security details, others do not and they regularly appear in public without protection. Gabby Giffords of Arizona was hit in the head and grievously injured while meeting with constituents at a supermarket parking lot in 2011.
