Donald Trump blasts report on possible obstruction of justice probe

"Mueller is now clearly the tip of the deep state spear aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency", former House Speaker Newt Gingrich wrote on Twitter.

President Trump took to Twitter on Thursday to offer his first comments on news that he is being examined for possible obstruction of justice - an investigation he dismissed as part of the "phony" accusations of collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation a year ago.

Trump has repeatedly lambasted the Russian Federation probe as a "witch hunt", using the phrase in at least eight tweets since March.

The report in the Post cited anonymous sources who had been briefed on requests made by Mueller's investigators.

Accusations of obstruction arose last month when Mr Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

"You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

The situation changed, the Post reported, after Trump fired Comey.

Mueller's office declined to comment.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Mr Trump's personal lawyer, responded Wednesday evening to the Post report by saying: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal". Those officials are: Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence; Michael Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency; and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director. It is my view that fully investigating the facts, circumstances, and rationale for Mr Comey's removal will provide us the opportunity to do that on a cooperative, bipartisan basis, " according to the letter.

Mueller met with Sens. At his hearing last week, Comey testified that he believed he was sacked on May 9 "because of the Russian Federation investigation". Richard Burr and Mark Warner, the Republican and Democratic leadership of the Senate intelligence committee Wednesday.

Comey said he believed Mueller would look into Trump for obstruction of justice.

"I don't think it's for me to say whether the conversation I had with the President was an effort to obstruct", Comey said. "I took it as a very disturbing thing, very concerning, but that's a conclusion I'm sure the special counsel will work towards to try and understand what the intention was there, and whether that's an offense".

Law enforcement sources tell CNN that the special counsel is gathering information and considering whether there is evidence to launch a full-scale obstruction investigation.

Mr Grassley announced the investigation in a letter to California senator Dianne Feinstein, the panel's top Democrat.
