Bill Cosby faces retrial on sexual assault charges

Bill Cosby faces retrial on sexual assault charges

Then, prosecutors would get four months to decide whether they want to retry Cosby or drop the charges.

The judge could choose to retry Cosby, but that is unlikely to happen right away.

"I have no authority to do this", Judge Steven O'Neill said in the 52nd hour of deliberations on Friday night. She issued a statement calling District Attorney Kevin Steele "heinously and exploitively ambitious". How do I describe the counsels for the accusers? Totally unethical. How do I describe many, but not all, general media? "Blatantly vicious entities that continually disseminated intentional omissions of truths for the primary goal of greedily selling sensationalism at the expense of a human life", Cosby's wife added.

What's considered the best chance of getting Cosby on criminal charges - which he's never faced despite accusations from more than 30 women - will end with the judge declaring a mistrial.

Cosby was charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault and face up to 10 years for each charge. She spent almost seven hours on the stand over the course of two days telling her side of the story for the first time.

She had told jurors that the comedian attacked her after drugging her with pills he said would help her to "relax" during a dinner at his house in 2004.

"It's way too early to celebrate, Mr. Cosby", she said, adding that "justice may be just around the corner".

Constand also noted that when she came to, she felt "humiliated" and "confused".

Cosby lawyer Brian McMonagle fired back that jurors might be under the assumption they have to deliberate until "the cows come home". It wasn't immediately known how many jurors wanted to convict and how many wanted to acquit. Despite her disappointment over the outcome, Allison struck a hopeful note, saying she hoped bringing Cosby to trial would encourage other sexual assault victims to step forward.

Cosby was accused of drugging and molesting Andrea Constand in 2004.

The defense rested after a single, six-minute appearance by a detective.

NPR's Scott Simon asked Cosby to directly address the allegations in a November 2014 interview.

Prosecutors had sought to have 13 other accusers testify in Constand's case, but the judge allowed only one, finding that more would unfairly prejudice the jury.

"It's not a fib".

Cosby's wife, Camille, joined him in the courtroom as his defense team presented its case. The defense frequently emphasized Camille's presence in the courtroom to solidify the infidelity narrative to the jury, with McMonagle directly apologizing to Camille at one point as he reviewed a decade-old testimony in which her husband talked about "petting" with Constand.

"I'm not used to this", he said. "And you danced", he said directly to his client.

Camille left in the afternoon and did not return.

Prosecutors also gave their closing arguments Monday afternoon where it was argued Cosby's statements to police and a civil suit deposition were an admission of guilt backed up by testimony straight from accuser Andrea Constand and witness Kelly Johnson.

His deposition was sealed for years until a judge released parts in 2015 at the request of The Associated Press, prompting a new set of prosecutors to take a fresh look at the case and charge him.

The jury filed out nearly within arm's reach of Andrea Constand, Cosby's accuser.
