NHL Expansion Draft weighted in giving Vegas competitive team

NHL Trade/Waiver Freeze Now In Effect

Sharks to play Vegas for first time this preseason

The Vegas Golden Knights will select one player from each of the NHL's other 30 teams Wednesday in the expansion draft, leaving the Kings' new management team perhaps wondering, "Only one?"

All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

After months of speculating, guessing, and building our own rosters on sites like CapFriendly, we are all going to learn how right or, more likely, wrong we were about how National Hockey League general managers value certain players.

Teams were required to ask any player with a no-movement clause to waive it for the expansion draft by Monday afternoon - you can find a full roundup of those requests here - but the players don't have to give their answer until Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET. Just like they will deal with it if McPhee takes Grabner or Lindberg or Fast. Until then, Hextall may be shopping for a veteran goalie either via a trade at the draft or come the July 1 free agency horn. Montreal may have to cut a side deal with McPhee for a draft pick to have Vegas stay away from Radulov.

“It forces us that were in a situation that we felt that this could happen, ” Ottawa GM Pierre Dorion said. "I think what you wonder or worry about, you don't know the player, you don't know the (salary) cap hit, so it poses different issues for everybody". Don't be surprised to see GM Lou Lamoriello engage in some wheeling and dealing in the days and hours leading up to the draft. Those side deals won't be announced until Wednesday night, leaving nearly a full four days of pondering and guessing why Player A is exposed or why Player B was protected.

The Canes traded for goalie Scott Darling and have signed him to a four-year contract. Part of the uncertainty with regards to what will unfold is that each team has its preferences of who to protect and who to unload. They already own the sixth overall pick, but TSN's Pierre LeBrun spoke to an National Hockey League general manager, who believes there's a chance the Golden Knights have already made side deals to acquire more draft picks. Signing pending restricted free agent Marko Dano on Tuesday makes it likely he and Shawn Matthias are the forwards who are left unprotected under the 7-3-1 option.

The 26-year-old American scored 17 goals and added 38 assists over 81 games with the Rangers in 2016-17, his seventh year with the club.

The young van Riemsdyk is arguably the most likely Blackhawks player to be taken in the draft, assuming that they don't already have a trade in place with Vegas.

The Capitals traded for Tyler Graovac on Wednesday in order to expose him and protect Lars Eller. Goalie Jeff Glass is under contract for next season and fulfills the requirement for exposed goaltenders.

The Expansion Draft will populate the roster for soon-to-join the NHL Las Vegas franchise.

The first steps of the long awaited/planned/dreaded expansion draft are finally upon us. If they have to hold to him, they may need to move one of their other assets so they don't lose them for nothing in the expansion draft. They'll get a pretty good head start, better than a lot of expansion teams have in the past. That's far better than losing him for nothing.

How should Vegas Golden Knights GM George McPhee go about his business?
