Feliciano Lopez advances to Stuttgart Open quarters after win over Jeremy Chardy

Lucas Pouille will play Feliciano Lopez in the final of the Stuttgart Open. Just when the deciding tie break became inevitable, Lopez managed to score a break in the last game of the match to seal the deal and reach the final.

"The match was so close from the beginning to the end", Lopez told the ATP's official website.

In the semi-final he meets Ivo Karlovic, a 6-4 6-4 victor over Daniel Medvedev.

The experienced Lopez had earlier edged out German Mischa Zverev in the first semi-final, 6-7 (2/7), 7-6 (7/4), 7-5. "In the important points, I was very solid".

Johnson, McIlroy and Day miss US Open cut
But the world's top three missed the cut - the first time that has happened at a major since the rankings began in 1986. Masters champion Sergio Garcia meanwhile was lurking five off the lead after a two-under-par 70.

The Spaniard is set to play next against the victor of the match between Germans Tommy Haas and sixth-seeded Mischa Zverev.

Luxembourg's Muller, seeded four and beaten tournament finalist past year, produced one of his best displays of the season to upset second seed Zverev 7-6 (7/5) 6-2. The second set brought a similar scoreboard, with 12 easy holds on both sides, setting up another tie break.

Berdych hit 21 aces to 19 for Lopez, but Lopez saved all nine break points against him on the grass court.
