Trump confirms he's under investigation, fires angry tweets

18 June 2017, 01:33 | Opal Carroll

If Trump ordered Brand to fire Mueller and she refused, the responsibility to oversee the special counsel would fall to Dana Boente, the USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, according to a presidential executive order.

Rosenstein told a closed session of Congress last month that he learned Comey would be dismissed one day before penning his memo. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote.

Both Trump's subtle threats and Rosenstein's involvement in Comey's firing might lead the deputy AG to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation.

The department would not comment on the record on whether Trump, who has repeatedly complained about leaks on the case, requested the statement. Rosenstein, who would be responsible for actually dismissing Mueller, told US lawmakers he would fire him only with good cause.

On Thursday night, he issued a statement lashing out at news stories sourced to anonymous officials and that he believes are causing the President and Republicans to attack the Justice Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Mueller for alleged leaks.

Rosenstein could have asserted that although the regulations allow the attorney general (here Rosenstein because of Jeff Sessions's recusal) to ask for explanations of the special counsel's investigative process, and require periodic reports from the special counsel to the attorney general, he wasn't going to be supervising Mueller's investigation. Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing, many in Trump's orbit - including his son Donald Trump Jr. and adviser Newt Gingrich - have deemed Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal. But Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to hand off oversight of the probe given his own role in Comey's firing.

Almost 200 Dems Sue Trump for Placing 'Personal Interest Over National Interest'
The Post says the lawsuit centers on Trump retaining ownership of his company when he became president. There has been no official response to the complaint by the United States government so far.

The order by the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government. Trump got rid of Comey, in May to hamper an inquiry into his sacked national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

The Twitter attacks came as Vice President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation.

She then moved on to the law firm Cooper, Carvin & Rosenthal, eventually landing under former White House counsel Alberto R. Gonzales, according to The Washington Post, and later ran the DOJ's Office of Legal Policy during President George W. Bush's administration.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Senate Intelligence Committee member, said she was "increasingly concerned" Trump would try to fire not only Mueller, but also Rosenstein.

In another indication of the seriousness of the probe, Michael Cohen, a personal attorney to Trump, said he has retained attorney Stephen Ryan, a former assistant US attorney, to represent him in the ongoing probes. Cohen has worked for Trump since the mid-2000s and was active in the campaign. Cohen has received a subpoena from one of the congressional committees looking into the Russian Federation issue.
