They were able to get through a locked gate and overpower two officers, one of whom was driving the transport bus.

"I think it's a testament to the training, I think it's a testament to our individuals and I think it's a testament to our men and women at the sheriff's office, that they handled themselves very well in a very tight, tough situation". Dubose and Rowe remained inside the home of the couple - who police say are "extremely traumatised" - for three hours as they took clothing and jewellery, and ate beef stew.

At the time of the shooting, 31 other inmates were on board the bus, which was en route to a diagnostic facility when the escape took place.

Dubose, who has elaborate tattoos on his face and neck, began a 20-year sentence in 2015.

The guards killed in the escape were Baldwin State Prison officers Sergeants Christopher Monica and Curtis Billue.

"The pain endured by the families and loved ones of Sergeant Christopher Monica and Sergeant Curtis Billue endures, however", Deal said in a statement.

He said the focus now was tracking them down and offering compassion to the families of the corrections officers, killed in the line of duty.
