SHAPIRO: What have you heard in Belleville from people who knew Hodgkinson?

Four people - including Rep. Steve Scalise, the House majority whip from Louisiana, who was shot in the hip - were wounded in the shooting. It was the last practice before the big game on Thursday - a friendly, partisan competition that has been played to raise money for charity during most years since 1909. The bullet tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said. He is still listed in critical condition. The statement noted that he has done better over the past 24 hours but will require further surgery and will stay in the hospital for some time.

Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, is also in critical condition. The assailant, who had nursed grievances against President Donald Trump and the GOP, fought a gun battle with police before he, too, was shot and later died.

Officials say James T. Hodgkinson wounded House Rep. Steve Scalise and others Wednesday morning.

She agreed to speak to the press only if they would leave her property afterward, the deputy had told reporters beforehand. James left Belleville in March to travel to Alexandria. But when his wife was specifically asked if politics "consumed" him, she refused to say. Democratic former Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille said he had spoken often with the man on recent mornings at the nearby YMCA.

Agents are also reviewing Hodgkinson's social media posts in the days and weeks leading up to the shooting.

Hodgkinson's relatives told the Belleville News-Democrat they thought he had retired and moved to Washington, which his sister described as a "nasty place".

"He never bothered anybody that I knew of", Guetterman said, shaking his head in disbelief that someone living that close to him could do something like that.

"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign". "I've been here for 10 years and this is kind of the major news".

Authorities are still working to determine the motive for the attack, according to AP.

The FBI has already recovered two weapons: a 9 mm handgun and a 7.62 caliber rifle.

A half-dozen patrons gathered at the tavern Thursday afternoon for the $1 taco special and to shoot pool said Hodgkinson didn't hang out there and wasn't known to them.
