Bill Cosby leaves the Montgomery County Courthouse during his sexual assault trial Wednesday

Jurors in comedian Bill Cosby's trial on sexual assault charges told the judge Thursday they are deadlocked and can't reach a verdict.

"We can not come to a unanimous consensus on any of the counts", O'Neill read.

O'Neill instructed the panel of seven men and five women to keep pressing for a unanimous decision.

O'Neill, in his instruction to the jury, reminded them it is their duty to deliberate "with a view to reaching agreement, if it can be done without violence to your individual judgment".

"I want to reiterate how proud I am of each and every one of you", O'Neill said as he sent the jury back to the hotel.

The judge denied a defence request for a mistrial.

The entertainer, who at the time served on the Philadelphia university's board of trustees, says their intimate encounter was consensual. Cosby is charged with drugging and molesting Constand at his home in 2004.

Each of the three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Cosby carries a maximum 10-year prison term, though the counts could be merged at sentencing if he is convicted.

This is published unedited from the IANS feed. They have spent days asking to have testimony read back, including Constand's trial testimony as well as the first report she made to police in 2005.

Lili Bernard, another alleged Cosby sexual assault survivor, clashed with Cosby supporters outside the courthouse Thursday afternoon.

In 1995, it took a Los Angeles jury four hours to acquit American football star O.J. Simpson of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman.

As he described reaching into Constand's trousers, Cosby testified, "I go into the area that is somewhere between permission and rejection".

The trial outside Philadelphia involves Cosby's sexual encounter with a woman at his home in 2004. The judge has ordered jurors to return to deliberations and try - again - to reach a decision.

Cosby knit his fingers, working his hands into a ball that he held in front of his mouth as the contents of the note were read in court by O'Neill. The district attorney at the time declined to press charges, citing insufficient evidence.

Constand claims that Cosby who she saw as a father figure drugged her and then sexually assaulted her. Cosby's defense team pointed out that after the so-called assault, Constand continued a relationship with Cosby. That prompted O'Neill to ask the comedian on Friday whether he understood that a hung jury would allow prosecutors to retry him. Constand - an athletic, 6-foot-tall college basketball staffer - said they made her dazed and groggy, and unable to say no or fight back when Cosby went inside her trousers.

Some 60 women have come forward over the past couple years, accusing Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting them, according to news outlets.

The case has already helped demolish his nice-guy reputation as America's Dad. "That's the question", said criminal lawyer Alan J. Tauber, who wasn't involved in the case.

This news organization does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done.
