Justin Thomas shoots 63, trails Brian Harman by 1 at US Open

19 June 2017, 02:20 | Sandy Nunez

It was the lowest third-round score in Open history.

Justin Thomas fired a record-breaking nine-under-par 63 to seize the lead at the US Open in a dramatic third round dominated by low-scoring on Saturday.

There were 18 rounds in the 60s, starting with one for the record book.

He then drilled a 300-yard second shot to around eight feet before rolling in his eagle putt to roars from the galleries at the Erin Hills Course in Wisconsin.

Erin Hills again lacked enough wind to be the stern test the U.S. Open wants, and it showed.

The previous best single-round record in relation to par had been Johnny Miller's eight-under 63 in the final round of the 1973 US Open.

Also at 11 under was Tommy Fleetwood, who was poised to take the lead until his pitch came up short, his next shot went 60 feet down a slope on the back of the 18th green and he turned potential birdie into bogey and settled for a 68. He putted for birdie to move to 2 under for the day and 2 over for the tournament.

A flawless tee-shot left him in the centre of the fairway and he then ripped his second some 300 yards to leave himself with an eight-foot putt to clinch the lowest to par score in the history of the US Open.

Jordan Spieth at least made the cut at the US Open, which is more than Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Jason Day could say.

Mets fall 10 1/2 games behind Nationals after 7-2 loss
A couple of hours before the first pitch, Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson held a news conference to provide injury updates. Anthony Rizzo has two leadoff homers the past two nights for the Cubs in his first two career starts atop the batting order.

"But I'm confident that I am prepared for whatever happens", he added, "whether something bad happens or something good happens - I'll just rely on that confidence". They're playing against the same people they always play against. "And the greens are absolutely handsome, but not too hard to putt".

South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen had looked like being the early pacesetter, the former Open champion going to the turn in 32 and picking up shots on the 11th and 15th, only to run up a double bogey on the 17th.

But there was a healthy dose of scratchiness in the round.

Thomas set the tone for his record-setting round when he holed a spectacular birdie putt on the fifth hole. On the par-4 10th hole, he three-putted from long distance after a poor approach.

Paul Casey carded a triple bogey for the second day running but unlike on day two, was unable to bounce back with five birdies in succession.

If Thomas had already caught the eye - both with his impressive play and bright pink pants - by the time he reached the 18th, the best was certainly still to come.

On that occasion, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Hale Irwin and Ray Floyd shared the halfway lead, with Irwin going on to win the "Massacre at Winged Foot" on seven over par.

Rickie Fowler, who is two shots back, said after his round Saturday that he was hoping the wind would pick up to make the course tougher.
