During the operation, militants present in the area fired upon the search parties with automatic weapons.

According to PTI, the militants attacked the army convoy and soon fled from the spot.

Funeral of commander Junaid Mattoo held at his ancestral village in Khudwani of Qaimoh tehsil of Anantnag district.

Local media reports said militants looted the service rifles of policemen following the attack.

Police officials who spoke to Anadolu Agency on the condition of anonymity, said militants opened fire on a group of policemen in Achabal area killing six. He had a meteoric rise within the Lashkar group and was appointed commander for South Kashmir after he killed two policemen in broad daylight at Anantnag bus stand in June previous year. "Junaid's killing is a great achievement for us and a blow to LeT", said Director General of Police (DGP) S.P. Vaid.

J&K police on Saturday identified the three militants who were killed in Arwani village of Anantnag district after a day-long gunfight on Friday.

24-year-old Mattoo joined militancy in June 2015.

Meanwhile, dozens of people were injured after Indian Army and police personnel vandalized Turkewangam village in Shopian district Friday night, beating people ruthlessly and ransacked residential houses.

The security forces were also fired upon from the crowd that was indulging in stone pelting, police said, adding that the Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were desperate to save Mattoo. Militants also paid gun salute to Adil.

Police sources said the incident took place on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Bijbehara area.

Earlier on Saturday, militants tonight shot dead a civilian in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, police said. While the government forces were trying to lay cordon of the village, young men hit roads and threw stones and brickbats towards policemen, apparently in a bid to help militants break through the siege.

After Sabzar Ahmad Bhat, a close associate of Burhan Wani, was killed in an encounter on May 27, Mattoo is the second big success for Indian security forces.
