Man grabs machete, chases off armed robbers

Five South Florida men were arrested Friday in connection with an armed burglary.

- A machete-wielding homeowner confronted three would-be robbers early Thursday morning, holding one of them for deputies and chasing the others off in a dramatic melee that was caught on surveillance video.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office report on the incident, the alleged robbers told the victim to get on the ground.

The victim told authorities about two other suspects who had escaped, and they and two others were eventually found in a auto at a nearby gas station.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's deputies were able to get a description of the suspects' vehicle and located it at a gas station nearby.

The homeowner drops the board and is pursued by a pair of men with a rifle and a crowbar as a third man with a machete watches over his friend. Cabrera-Basulto and Jauregui-Lorente are seen fleeing the home while the victim arms himself with a machete and holds Beltran-Vazquez until deputies arrive. Inside the vehicle were four men - Cabrera-Basulto, Jauregui-Lorente, Jorge Valido-Leyva and Roberto Salcedo-Balanza - wearing dark clothing. Ronier Jauregui-Lorente and Angel Cabrera-Basulto were each charged with two counts of armed robbery.

During interviews with detectives, two of the five men arrrested admitted to the robbery, while another pair admitted to helping coordinate and plan the robbery, according to the sheriff's office. Jorge Valido-Leyva and Roberto Salcedo-Balanza face two counts each of principal to armed robbery. More charges could be filed as the investigation is ongoing.
