"Congressman Steve Scalise is in serious condition", the release said. The injuries had put the majority whip at an "imminent risk of death", said Jack Sava, director of trauma care for MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

The person said Saturday that investigators aren't sure of the significance of the names and don't know if it was a list of people he was targeting.

The bullet struck Scalise in the hip, and traveled across his body, shattering bones and passing through internal organs, causing major internal bleeding.

Scalise's wife, Jennifer, issued a statement saying she was thankful for the "incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes" the family has received since the shooting.

Capitol Police officer David Bailey and Texas Rep. Roger Williams were also injured during the incident. On Friday, a senior doctor at the hospital said Scalise, 51, had been at the brink of death because of extensive blood loss when he arrived at the hospital by helicopter.

Ms Griner remains in hospitali at MedStar after being shot in the ankle and Mr Bailey was spotted on Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.

Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died. He will be in the hospital for some time.
