Trump allies question Mueller probe
19 June 2017, 12:31 | Opal Carroll
On Monday, rumors emerged that President Donald Trump is allegedly considering firing Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor who was appointed to investigate the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation.
The Justice Department declined CBS News' request for comment.
Both Rosenstein and Sessions are testifying Tuesday on Capitol Hill.
On Trump's plane ride home after a trip to Wisconsin, Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters he "has no intention" of firing Mueller, even though she maintained that "the president has the right to". Trump himself does not have the authority to directly fire the special counsel. Under the regulation, Special Counsel Mueller may be fired only for good cause, and I am required to put that cause in writing.
This immediately led to the "Saturday Night Massacre" with the resignations of the Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus on October 20, 1973. That, to me, is the smartest thing to do, the best thing to do, and that's what I think hopefully will happen. And leading Republican legislators on Tuesday waved off the idea of firing Mueller, with House Speaker Paul Ryan saying that his advice was to "let Robert Mueller do his job" and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell voicing confidence in the special counsel.
"Obstruction of justice is really a very hard crime to make out", Starr said on "New Day".
Puerto Rican voters back statehood in questioned referendum
The board recommended, among many measures, to cut US$300 million to $500 million from the Puerto Rican state government budget. The ballot was later changed to include "current territorial status" as an option, but the call for a boycott remained.
President Donald Trump acknowledged for the first time Friday that he is under federal investigation as part of the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.
"And the reason for that is, that if it is within the scope of Director Mueller's investigation - and I've been a prosecutor for 27 years - we don't want people talking publicly about the subjects of ongoing investigation", he continued. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii.
The appearances, however, are likely to be overshadowed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions' public appearance at a Senate intelligence committee hearing. Asked in a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing if there was any cause to fire Mueller, Rosenstein flatly replied: "No". Though some in the White House have preached caution, fearing a repeat of the firestorm over Comey's firing, many in Trump's orbit - including his son Donald Trump Jr. and adviser Newt Gingrich - have deemed Mueller biased and worthy of dismissal.
However, a close confidante of Trump's said Mueller's ousting is under consideration. An official of Trump's transition confirmed the lawyer's internal order, which was sent Thursday. "Mr Ruddy never spoke to the president regarding this issue", an official said.
Mr Sessions vigorously denied having an undisclosed meeting with Russia's ambassador to the US. But his refusal to answer a question about who directed him to write the infamous memo suggests he might also be a witness to a crime being investigated by the special counsel.
That would have to be done by the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, given that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from DOJ's Russian Federation investigation. Rosenstein last month appointed a special counsel to oversee the Russian Federation investigation.
