One injured aide has been released. It must be said that Sanders took to the floor of the Senate immediately and denounced the shooter's actions in the clearest and strongest terms possible.

That's the reaction many expressed on Thursday following the shootout at the baseball diamond in Alexandria, Va., a day earlier. "As members of Congress, we are not Democrats and Republicans today; we are simply public servants".

A single shot left Scalise, 51, with a shattered bone in his left hip and internal injuries that caused severe bleeding.

He was transported to George Washington University Hospital, and later died. Matt Mika Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods, was helping with practice when he was shot.

Representative Steve Scalise, two political staffers and two Capitol Police officers sustained gunshot wounds from the rampage. The shooter's brother told the newspaper that Hodgkinson traveled to Washington in recent weeks to protest.

St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson said Wednesday that Hodgkinson showed the deputy all required firearms licenses and documentation for the high-powered hunting rifle, which he said he was simply using for target practice.

Trump's friend Christopher Ruddy says President 'considering' firing Mueller
Rosenstein , who has been on the job for six weeks, said only he could fire Mueller, and only if he found good cause to do so. Rosenstein may be asked to address the issue when he speaks at a Senate subcommittee hearing Tuesday morning .

According to his Facebook page, Hodgkinson was a fervent supporter of Sanders, the feisty independent who nearly defeated Hillary Clinton previous year in a tough fight for the Democratic White House nomination.

James Hodgkinson was expected home soon because he had run out of money.

No one can truly know what motivates a man to drive halfway across the country, live out of his vehicle - as Mr. Hodgkinson apparently did - and attempt a mass killing of members of Congress. He had access to the facility through Wednesday and arrived less than two hours before the shooting, the YMCA said.

Hodgkinson's relatives told the Belleville News-Democrat they thought he had retired and moved to Washington, which his sister described as a "nasty place". When asked what she wanted to say to the families of the injured, she said she "didn't know who was shot".

President Donald Trump called Griner and another officer who responded to the shooting, officer David Bailey, heroes. But no matter what authorities discover about Hodgkinson (and he appears to have had other troubles in his life), Wednesday's attack should cause a gut check about what passes for political discourse in this country. The weapons, a high-powered 7.62- caliber rifle and a 9mm handgun, were recovered at the scene, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it has no evidence that suggests the sales were illegal.
