Cyborg vs. Anderson for 145 title at UFC 214; de Randamie stripped
20 June 2017, 12:35 | Sandy Nunez
Germaine de Randamie has been stripped of the UFC women's featherweight title
The UFC also revealed that Germaine de Randamie had been stripped of her featherweight title after refusing to face Cyborg.
Ever since winning the inaugural UFC women's featherweight title back in February at UFC 208, Germaine de Randamie has been pretty quiet.
"Germaine and her team have talked, and the position is that she will not fight "Cyborg" because "Cyborg" is a known and proven cheater", Brian Butler, de Randamine's manager, said in the statement to MMAjunkie's Mike Bohn.
'UFC maintains that any champion is expected to accept fights against the top contenders in their respective weight classes in order to maintain the integrity of the sport, ' a statement read. She expressed her interest in returning to 135-pounds and said she would not fight Cyborg, who is the clear No. 1 contender in the division. (I have my reasons for that). Despite the Australian's lack of experience in the UFC, Cyborg is still expecting a tough fight, given some of Anderson physical advantages.
'So, we went to Invicta and said, 'Get us an opponent.' We signed that bout agreement, and not more than six hours later, the UFC called and said, 'Hey, let's look at that Justino matchup'.
As for Anderson, she joins the UFC from Invicta FC where she was their current featherweight champion, having claimed the belt in January after defeating Charmaine Tweet via TKO. "Instead of fighting someone who has lost their last couple of fights at a lower weight, I'm getting the chance to fight the No. 3-ranked featherweight in the world".
"Cyborg", a devastating knockout artist, doesn't foresee her first UFC title fight going the distance. Cyborg promises fans her fight with Anderson is one they won't want to take their eyes off. I honestly believe I'm the best in the world and I'm the only one that has the skills, the ability and the fight IQ to beat her.
UFC 214 is headlined with a light heavyweight championship as Daniel Cormier defends his belt in a rematch against former champ Jon Jones.
