If it passes the House, President Donald Trump would have to either sign or veto a bill that the White House has had little response to so far.

The sanctions against Russian Federation are "in response to the violation of the territorial integrity of the Ukraine and Crimea, its brazen cyber-attacks and interference in elections, and its continuing aggression in Syria", according to the sponsors.

Democrats pressed for and succeeded in adding a measure that would restrict President Donald Trump - whose administration has been entangled in investigations into ties to Russian officials - from lifting the sanctions unless approved by Congress. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Mike Lee of Utah, both Republicans, were the only votes against it - bolsters existing sanctions and would allow Congress to thwart any presidential effort to curtail sanctions without congressional approval.

Mr. Putin said there was no reason to impose new sanctions and said at the heart of the new measures was the controversy in the US around contacts between President Donald Trump's campaign team and Russian officials. Ben Cardin, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told CNN. "This bill is the first time Congress has come together since the JCPOA, the Iran nuclear deal, to do just that", Corker added.

A senior Trump administration official has told Politico that the White House will attempt to convince House Republicans to make "administration-friendly changes" to a bipartisan new Senate bill which slaps Russian Federation with Trump-proof sanctions in retaliation for the Kremlin's interference in last year's US presidential election.

Finally, it provides that no sanctions can be lifted by the President without Congressional review.

Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths 'gutted' after England's last-gasp leveller
With five minutes left in the half, England again went close through Adam Lallanna who smashed Gordon's side netting. Kane , 23, has enjoyed a great 2016/17 campaign for Spurs , scoring 29 goals in the Premier League .

The new sanctions aim to impose new restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile program and to punish Tehran for "supporting terrorism and human rights violations".

The White House has been silent on the proposal and administration officials have been unclear on what the official position is.

"These additional sanctions will also send a powerful and bipartisan statement to Russian Federation and any other country who might try to interfere in our elections that they will be punished". Certain Russian industries, like its mining and metals industries, would also be targeted.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that the Trump administration was "committed to existing sanctions against Russia" but was "still reviewing the new Russian Federation sanctions amendment".

Though there's little dispute over Russia's interference in the election, questions remain over the objective and extent of the meddling.
