Doctors: Scalise in critical condition but they are 'encouraged' by his improvement

Scalise Still in Critical Condition But Vitals are Stabilized

Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said this afternoon that Scalise had "sustained a single rifle wound that entered in the area of the left hip".

The surgeon on Friday said he was "a lot more confident and optimistic" about Scalise's recovery than he was two days ago.

Scalise was shot in the hip, and the bullet damaged bone, blood vessels and internal organs.

But he added: "We fully expect him to be able to walk", and "hopefully run".

A message posted on Scalise's Twitter account said the congressman from Louisiana on Saturday was watching the Louisiana State baseball game and "rooting hard for a big Tigers win" in the College World Series.

Scalise's wife, Jennifer, issued a statement saying she was thankful for the "incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes" the family has received since the shooting.

US dollar rises after Fed Dudley's comments, yen falls
The 10-year Treasury note TMUBMUSD10Y, +1.13% was up 1.4 basis point at 2.171%, compared with 2.157% late Friday in NY . Spot gold was down 0.3 percent at $1,248.7 an ounce at 1338 GMT, up from an earlier $1,247.41, its lowest since May 24.

Four men, including Scalise, a police officer, a congressional aide and a lobbyist, were shot and wounded when a man identified as James Hodgkinson, opened fire on the lawmakers as they practiced for an annual charity baseball game between Republicans and Democrats.

Officials also said Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, had pictures of the ballpark on his cellphone, and had been spending time at a YMCA center beside the ballpark for several weeks - using his laptop in the lobby for hours, the Times reported. "So important. So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you".

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

The FBI said in a joint statement with other law enforcement agencies Friday that it is continuing to process evidence in an effort to determine a motive in the shooting. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers.

The American Hospital Association defines "critical" condition as: "Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits".
