Trump lashes out at Democrats after Georgia win

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif. arrives for a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington Thursday

The response from some is that it better be.

After the defeat of Jon Ossoff in Tuesday's special election for Georgia's 6th Congressional district, Democrats and liberals are waking up to Einstein's definition of insanity - doing the same thing repeatedly and each time expecting different results. And Republican Ralph Norman defeated Democrat Archie Parnell on Tuesday in SC for the House seat vacated by White House budget director Mick Mulvaney.

The road to a Democratic House majority runs through dozens of districts similar to the affluent, well-educated northern suburbs of Atlanta where Ossoff was defeated, and the outcome there is likely to reassure Republicans already nervous about their chances of holding control under Trump next year. He followed that up with a Wednesday morning memo, declaring, "The House is in play".

The minority leader is elected during a behind-closed-doors vote by members of that particular party, with Pelosi last winning in November, 134-63 over Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan. Ryan added, "I don't think it's fair".

A number of Democrats have renewed their calls for Pelosi to step down as minority leader and make room for new ― and younger ― voices.

"I certainly hope the Democrats do not force Nancy P out". That would be very bad for the Republican Party - and please let Cryin' Chuck stay!

BENNETT: That political consolation prize doesn't sit very well with some of the party's rank-and-file members like Congressman Tim Ryan of OH who says coming close isn't good enough.

On that point, Ryan agreed that the Democrats need to focus less on President Donald Trump and more on economic issues.

Gergen: Special election victories show Trump could beat Dems in 2020
Tim Ryan criticized his party's brand, their outreach to voters and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi . In this week's Georgia and SC special elections, Republicans ran ads that targeted Pelosi .

Democrats lost a heartbreaker of a special election Tuesday in Georgia.

"We as Democrats have to come to terms with the fact that we lost again", said Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass.

Overall, Wasserman found, Democrats outperformed the voting tendencies of their districts by 8 percentage points in this year's special elections, a good omen for 2018 even if they did not win a single one of the open seats. So it's time for change. I think our leadership owes us an explanation for what's going on in these four elections but also a plan moving forward.

The National Republican Congressional Committee said that internal data shows linking Pelosi to the Democratic candidate in Georgia helped the GOP win, according to Business Insider. "It is possible that he could actually get re-elected if Democrats aren't careful".

"I know folks were a little disappointed earlier this week".

None of that suggests that Pelosi faces an immediate challenge to her leadership. A loss in Georgia, after Democratic donors across the country (okay, mostly in California) gave time and money to try to stick it to Trump, is a significant momentum-killer.

"I'd like to keep her right where she is, because our record is extraordinary against her", Trump said in a Fox News interview. "We're a family. We're going to have those discussions".
