On the weekend of June 24-25, the public will have a chance to meet and talk with Whitley County ham radio operators and see for themselves what the Amateur Radio Service is about as hams across the United States of America will be holding public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the operators set up a shop Saturday at two different locations in Howard County.

Five men spent Saturday afternoon and most of the night in Greater Ottumwa Park trying to make contact with other amateur radio operators across the US and Canada and Sunday morning they were back at it.

An amateur radio clumb in Albemarle County is demonstrating how the world would have to communicate if cell phones go out during an emergency situation.

Oldest licensed Winona radio operator John Kowalik has been a member since 1953, and said Ham Radio in Winona has been around for 40 to 45 years. "The ham guys on microphones can't do that". "Ham radio is for making friends".

"The commercial communications tend to fail during an acute disaster like that", Rocker said, "Ham radio will always work".

Participants began at 2 p.m. Saturday and the exercise will conclude at 2 p.m. Sunday.

"It's going really well", said club president Derek Hawk, "by about midnight we'd made a contact with every state in the USA, and we've made 575 total contacts so far". "We can often locate family members when given a name by a loved one".
