Black off-duty St. Louis officer shot by white officer

26 June 2017, 02:27 | Guillermo Sutton

Seven officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave, as is department policy after a shooting. The officer who shot the off-duty policeman is white. The dog was reportedly charging after police officers when they fired several rounds. Officers chased after the white sedan and used spoke strips at one point. They tried to stop the vehicle with spike strips and three people in the auto fired shots at officers.

According to the police statement, the armed suspects then fled on foot.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis interim Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole originally told reporters that the off-duty officer had come out of his home after a auto that was reported stolen crashed nearby, and that he was hit in the crossfire between officers and the suspects who had been inside the vehicle. He arrived as the other officers were carrying out the arrest.

"Two officers challenged the off-duty officer and ordered him to the ground, to which he complied".

The unnamed officer who was shot in the arm was released from the hospital Thursday. Tate also questioned validity of the white officer's alleged claim that he shot the off-duty officer because he feared for his own safety.

The victim's lawyer, Rufus J Tate Jr, told local media that the shooting was part of a wider problem in the USA with the perception of black men.

"In the police report you have so far, there is no description of a threat he received". "This is a real problem". "There is this perception that a black man is automatically feared", Tate said.

Johanna Konta takes hefty beating from Coco Vandeweghe in Birmingham
And, with the women's game as wide open as at any time in living memory, Konta goes into Wimbledon as a legitimate title hope. The 26-year-old told Press Association Sport: "I received my chest of drawers and my bedside table, which was very exciting".

Tate says a "black professional in law enforcement" was "treated as an ordinary black guy on the street". "This is a real problem".

St. Louis Police Department did not respond to HuffPost's request for comment.

On Tuesday, a federal judge awarded $1.5 million to the parents of Michael Brown, according to the Associated Press.

The news comes after authorities released dash cam footage on Tuesday of Philando Castile's shooting by St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez in Minnesota.

But Brown's killing was just one of many such incidents.

The city's Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that officers were responding to a possible vehicle theft after a recognition software flagged a license plate.

"Fearing for their safety, the two officers fired shots at the suspects, striking suspect one in the ankle", Mr O'Toole said.
