Android O tipped to arrive August 21

Google Camera v4.4 rolling out for Pixel Nexus Android One devices Lots of improvements

In a series of tweets, Ruddock says Google has pushed the release of Android O back from an initially planned release date and there is no new one that he's aware of. Moreover, the new version of Android will "most likely" be launched on August 21, the same rumor claims.

With Intel discontinuing the Edison and Joule hardware designs, Google is embracing NXPs hardware to plump out its collection of hardware that can support Android Things. He also claims to already know the name of Android O, but said that he didn't want "to ruin the surprise".

Google is also looking to support scalable production ready hardware, while still allowing developers to play with prototype boards as well. At the event, the company also gave a sneak peek into some of the features coming in Android O, the new Android version arriving later this year. Ruddock is of the view that the official name of Android 8.0 will be declared on August 21, the day of the solar eclipse.

Google is yet to confirm on the official name for the Android 8.0 (Android O) operating system. If Android O is named Oreo, Google would have to enter some kind of agreement with Mondelez International.

While the update only includes a handful of minor changes, they actually add up to making the photography experience on Android much better. It could be days or even weeks.

Android O will replace the existing Android Nougat or Android 7. Pixel and Pixel XL users were hoping for something similar this year. This is the final beta build before the stable build gets rolled out.

Of course unless you have a Pixel or Nexus phone you're unlikely to see Android O for a good while yet - get in touch with your Android phone manufacturer to see if and when you can expect to see the latest version of the mobile OS on your own handset.
