An Oregon mother says Portland Adventist Medical Center is responsible for her newborn's death

A mother is suing a hospital in OR after her newborn baby accidentally suffocated when he was left alone with her to be breastfed while she was still "groggy" after undergoing a caesarian section.

According to TIME, Portland Adventist Medical Center spokeswoman Kristi Spurgeon Johnson said she could not comment on the allegations or lawsuit until the hospital had reviewed to matter.

Three days later, she was still in recovery and under the influence of painkiller Vicodin and sleep aid Ambien when nurses brought the baby to her bed at 3 a.m. for so she could breastfeed, the lawsuit says.

A distraught Thompson woke up with Jacob lying unresponsive in her arms.

"She called for a nurse while she tried to get him to respond", the lawsuit states.

According to her lawyer, she is accusing the staff of being negligent for not only giving her such strong medication when she was going to have to breast feed him, but also for leaving her alone with him while she was in such a drowsy state and not checking on them for a whole hour.

His parents were told he'd suffered catastrophic brain damage and his life support was turned off when he was just 10 days old.

The suit seeks damages for the baby's "desperation and anxiety" as he was suffocated and his mother's "severe emotional distress upon unintentionally killing her firstborn child".

Conde said that Thompson now has a daughter, but Jacob was her "miracle baby".

Nevertheless it did release a statement with people saying, 'Adventist Medical Center is committed to providing quality, compassionate care to all of our patients. She said they were unable to provide any additional information at the time. He was born by Caesarean section on August 2, 2012, according to the suit.

He died six days later. "I am sharing our story in the hopes that no mother or family will ever have to suffer through a preventable tragedy such as this".

It was almost midnight one Sunday in the summer of 2012 when Thompson, who had undergone a Caesarean section a few days earlier, was given a cocktail of narcotic painkillers and sleep aids.

They also recommend placing babies in the same room where the parents sleep but not the same bed, breastfeeding as much and as for long as mothers can (reduces risks of SIDS), keeping babies away from smokers and places where people smoke, and keeping the baby at comfortable temperatures as hot temperatures increase the risk of SIDS.
