Bryce Harper injures left knee, leaves game

It was still raining when Harper's injury happened.

Bryce Harper left in pain Saturday.

It had been raining for most of the night, as the game didn't start until around 10 p.m. E.T. following a three-hour rain delay. The right fielder lunged for first base and slipped on the bag, and his leg appeared to buckle awkwardly. Harper fell to the ground and held his left knee for several minutes after making the second out.

He was injured with 4:59 left in the first quarter of Thursday's 23-3 preseason opening loss to the Baltimore Ravens . He was helped off the field by members of Washington's medical staff and didn't speak to the media after the game.

Harper was unable to put weight on his leg and was carried off the field by his hitting coach and the team trainer. His final season in the majors yielded uneven results, pairing an impressive 25 home runs with a less impressive.196/.257/.453 batting line in 362 PA. The big boppers in the middle of the order have stayed relatively healthy and the top four in the rotation have avoided major problems, though Stephen Strasburg is one of Washington's 11 players on the disabled list.

Rockies sign Howard • The Colorado Rockies agreed to a minor-league contract with first baseman Ryan Howard, a native St. Louisan who will report to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Elsewhere • Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (lower back soreness) is scheduled to throw a second bullpen session Sunday.
