30 children were reported dead in a span of 48 hours at Gorakhpur's BRD hospital

30 children were reported dead in a span of 48 hours

On Friday, it was reported that as many as 30 children lost their lives due to encephalitis in a span of 48 hours at the hospital.

A major tragedy in Gorakhpur involving the death of 30 people at BRD Medical College has caused massive outrage in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

However, a statement issued by the hospital said there had been a "drop in pressure in the supply of liquid oxygen" on Thursday, adding that cylinders were procured from various other suppliers.

He rejected the UP government's contention that the deaths were due to diseases such as Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis which are prevalent in the region. An official spokesperson in home ministry in Delhi said that as per to the Gorakhpur superintendent of police (SP), 21 children died due to a shortage of oxygen supply.

Reports have said some of the deaths were caused due to an oxygen shortage after a private supplier withdrew its equipment over unpaid hospital dues. "So the report about death of children because of oxygen issue is false", Mr Trivedi said.

Prashant Trivedi, the state's top health official, admitted there has been a problem in the pipeline which supplied oxygen.

Spending on public health in India, relative to the country's GDP, is among the lowest in the world.

Daily Afternoon Rain & Storms
The heavier and more extensive rain areas will move east tomorrow night with some rain lingering overnight. We start off with mostly cloudy skies across the Mid-South, with temps warming up to 84°; heat index: 87°.

The hospital has a special ward for patients of encephalitis.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Health Minister JP Nadda are set to visit ground zero on Sunday and take stock of the situation.

Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has announced an inquiry into the Gorakhpur hospital tragedy that has claimed several lives. He also said that the role of the oxygen supply firm will also be examined.

The Congress leader further informed that the suppliers who provide liquid oxygen were not given payment on time.

Gorakhpur being the constituency of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for last 19 years, the opposition parties are now on a protest demanding probe into the case.

About 24 hours after the accident, the Yogi who came in front of the media said, "I have visited BRD Hospital on 9th July and 9th August". These children have not died but killed.

Health Minister Sidhartha Nath Singh said the government had released funds on August 5, but Mishra cleared the payment on August 11, after the deaths of at least 60 children over five days this month.
