J&K: Three Hizbul terrorists, including commander, two armymen killed in Shopian encounter

Hizbul-Mujahideen commander Muhammad Yasin Itoo, the successor of Burhan Wani, and two other militants were killed in a fierce fire fight in a remote village of southern Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir overnight, official said on Sunday.

One Kevyt Konekivaan (KK) series rifle used by Itoo and two AK series rifles were recovered from the encounter scene.

In a separate incident early Sunday the freedom fighters fired at an army convoy in the northern area of Hajin and injured two police officers and a soldier.

On Saturday evening, Kashmir's inspector general of police, Muneer Khan told a local newspaper that several militants were surrounded by forces in Shopian, but another bunch was shooting at the security team from an open area outside the cordon. Five soldiers were injured in the gun battle. Sayed sustained injuries due to the firing of the security forces and who later succumbed to his injuries, the doctors at srinagar hospital said.

According to sources, the firing lasted for 10 minutes during the night after which a search Operation was launched.

Ahmed, a resident of the village of Awneera, said: "Today when the encounter ended, clashes [between police and protesters] started and many people suffered bullet and pellet injuries".
