Sanchez to miss EPL opener against Leicester

Arsenal dealt Sanchez blow

Aaron Ramsey and super-sub Olivier Giroud are usually good for a late goal and they did just that to claw three points away from Leicester and to the Gunners.

The striker, who the Gunners signed from Lyon for an initial fee of €53 million in the summer, finished clinically to put the hosts ahead after two minutes, expertly heading home Mohamed Elneny's cross.

"Insecurity goes quickly through a team and we had many experienced defenders out tonight - Koscielny, Mustafi, Mertesacker".

"We kept the faith and kept believing in our game to push hard". We've been courageous to the end and thank God we won the game. With Giroud replacing Holding, Wenger switched the formation from a 3-4-2-1 to a 4-4-2 with Giroud and Lacazette up front.

While the Frenchman insisted Arsenal were still "open" for business, he hinted that a flurry of new signings are unlikely.

"When you are a football manager and you're 3-2 down with 20 minutes left, you're happy however you win", he said. One has to go back to the 6-1 thrashing of Everton in 2009 to find the last time they kicked off the season in emphatic style. "We had some avoidable goals which we conceded and overall we have to work on that".

"But I don't want him to go and in the end he made a decision to stay and it was one of the days of recent weeks for me because I know how important he is".

Manchester City have spent almost £200million on new players this summer and Jenas believes they must be considered title favourites, although he insists it is the Champions League that boss Pep Guardiola really covets. The 28-year-old may be a favourite among fans and team mates, but the squad showed during their Community Shield victory that they could play well without the German. "He is a fantastic guy as well - committed, he loves the club". It remains to be seen if Wenger sticks to playing with three at the back or if he will change and play with two strikers.

Cech admitted it was a sloppy display from the Gunners' rearguard, but he took heart with the way they recovered to snatch the points.

"I suppose for Arsenal the big question is when Sanchez comes back, is he a replacement for Sanchez? Then we made mistakes and they punished us", Cech said.
