Amazon Recalls Possible Phony Eclipse Glasses

To protect your eyes when viewing the sun or an eclipse, NASA and the American Astronomical Society (AAS) advise you to use solar eclipse glasses or other solar filters from recommended manufacturers. If you are not able to make it to the narrow band of totality; don't worry, as you will still be able to view a partial solar eclipse throughout the entire United States.

On Aug. 21, the total eclipse path, called the path of totality, is only about 70 miles wide crossing the US from west to east. The total solar eclipse will travel from OR to SC and cross over 21 national park units and 7 trails.

Here in Topeka, we will experience a partial eclipse where the sun will be blocked about 99% at about 1:06 pm.

What happens if you view the eclipse without protection?

However, a majority of the sun will be covered no matter where you live across the state on Monday, Aug. 21.

So how can you watch the eclipse then? However, not all meet the required ISO 12312-2 global safety standards; make sure yours do. It's safe to look at a partial eclipse with these.

"Otherwise the total phase will depend on where you are and how close to the "center line" you are", Nelson said. For anyone who welds as part of their profession or as a hobby, this could be a way to not have to buy anything new at all.

While viewing the eclipse, stand still with your eyes closed and cover your them with the glasses BEFORE opening your eyes.

Shaw lives in York County and even tried ordering glasses offline. But they should have a stamp on there that says they are ISO approved for viewing the eclipse. NASA suggests stretching out your fingers on both hands and overlaying them, creating a waffle pattern. When the moon's trajectory overlaps, the sun's position in relation to a given point on Earth, we experience either a partial or total eclipse, a phenomenon that generally takes place over a three-hour period. The longer the box, the larger the projection. Stick your head through the hole and stand with your back to the sun.

The problem is that the sun's surface is so bright that if you stare at any portion of it, no matter how small, it produces enough light to damage individual retinal cells.

Don't attempt to view the eclipse through any other means, whether it's a camera, telescope, binoculars or other device. "The intense solar rays coming through the devices will damage your eyes".

Yes. You need to use some sort of special protection for your eyes, whether it be eclipse glasses, or shade #14 welder's glass.
