Nigerian Army Acts On Intelligence Report, Collaborates With UN
The army said it was a search for members of Islamist insurgency Boko Haram in Maiduguri, the epicenter of the fight against the militants, in an area of the city that included the United Nations compound.
The UN Staff said the soldiers forced their way into the building. Security forces entered the humanitarian base at 5am yesterday and searched the tented camp for close to three hours, the coordinator said in a statement.
"We will continue to collaborate with the United Nations (UN) humanitarian agencies to achieve the goals of the counter-insurgency campaign and other developments to address the humanitarian crisis in the North-East region".
Also at the meeting, the United Nations deputy humanitarian coordinator, Mr Peter Lundberg, said that in spite of the incident, UN's relationship of trust and collaboration with the government of Nigeria remained intact.
A worsening of relations between the United Nations and Nigeria could risk destabilising efforts to deliver aid to nearly seven million people affected by the eight-year conflict with Boko Haram, one of the biggest humanitarian crises in the world.
"The United Nations is extremely concerned that these actions could be detrimental to the delivery of lifesaving aid to the millions of vulnerable people in the northeast of Nigeria".
Newport, quoted Kallon as expressing "grave concern over the unauthorized search of a United Nations base for humanitarian workers in Maiduguri, Borno State".
According to him, the restructuring of the army's operations in the North-East in 2015 yielded fruitful results. This necessitated the need to intensify cordon and search in the Maiduguri metropolis and environment. Notwithstanding, the search operation was conducted peacefully at the premises, when the troops were allowed into it, just like other buildings.
"On August 10, 2017, the Theatre Command received information from one of its credible sources that some high-value Boko Haram suspects had infiltrated into Pompomari Bypass".
"It therefore became expedient to take preemptive action by combing the general area through a cordon and search operations".
The commander added that about 30 houses were searched during the exercise, adding that no arrests were made. "The general public is cautioned to avoid peddling rumours which may cause disaffection and to remain law abiding".
