Hamas Capitulates under PA Repression, Dissolves Government, Announces Elections

Hamas paves way for Palestinian elections as it signals readiness to end Fatah feud

Deadly clashes between Fatah and Hamas erupted in Gaza in June 2007, after which Hamas set up a rival government, leaving Fatah and the Palestinian Authority running parts of the West Bank not under Israeli control.

The armed islamist movement, says he will relinquish power in Gaza strip to unity government and that administration he has put in place will be dissolved.

Hamas and Fatah agreed in 2014 to form a national reconciliation government, but despite that agreement, Hamas's shadow government has continued to rule the Gaza Strip.

"Hamas's step is a positive indication if they really dissolved the administrative committee and showed its willingness to hand over control to the unity government", Mahmoud al-Aloul, a member of Abbas Fatah party, told Voice of Palestine radio.

The two sides have made several attempts at reconciliation.

Gaza has been under an Israeli blockade since Hamas violently seized control of the territory from the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas says it is aiming for talks with rivals Fatah as it aims to end their decade-long feud.

Alabama's Jalen Hurts talk about victory over Colorado State
Jalen Hurts made a gun symbol with hands, blowing off the barrels before tucking them back into their imaginary holsters. CSU added a touchdown with 9:53 left in the on the clock on a five-yard run on fourth down, to make it 41-17.

The Hamas movement said in a press statement that the announcement comes in response to the Egyptian efforts, led by the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, out of an Egyptian concern for achieving Palestinian reconciliation and ending the division.

Hamas agreed to dissolve the administrative committee it had formed in March a year ago to run the daily affairs in the Gaza Strip, the coastal enclave that Hamas has been ruling since it had violently taken control of it in the summer of 2007.

Last Tuesday, Fatah Central Committee Member Azzam al-Ahmad, who is now leading the Fatah delegation in Cairo, said if Hamas disbands its administrative committee, Abbas would lift its punitive measures against it.

The move also comes after a series of Palestinian Authority measures created to pressure Hamas, including reduction of electricity in Gaza and cutting of salaries.

Abbas, now in NY for the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly, has yet to comment on Hamas's announcement.

The Gaza Strip, a coastal enclave of some two million people, has faced deteriorating humanitarian conditions, with a severe electricity crisis and a lack of clean water, among other issues. Gaza's economy is in tatters and residents of the territory have electricity for only a few hours a day.
