Confident Vettel leaves Hamilton needing 'miracle'

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain celebrates after winning the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix on the Marina Bay City Circuit Singapore Sunday Sept. 17

Hamilton could only manage fifth place ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas, while Hamilton's chief Formula One title rival Sebastian Vettel stormed to pole.

Along with Vettel, Raikkonen and Verstappen, Magnussen, Hulkenberg, Ericsson, Kvyat and Alonso retired, meaning that only 12 drivers finished the two hour long race.

Lewis Hamilton believed he could claim an unlikely Singapore Grand Prix victory as soon as rain started to fall in the build-up to the race.

However, race stewards saw the incident differently and have ruled no driver had been wholly or predominantly to blame.

Sandwiched between the two Ferraris, Verstappen made contact with Raikkonen, sending the Finnish driver's auto into the pit wall.

"Your guess is as good as mine", said Hamilton when asked how he could best minimise the loss of points to Vettel on Sunday. For sure it is bitter, but it is done.

"We are not too far off so I can be quite happy with this qualifying", said the Dutchman of his 1:39.814 effort that secured a second-place starting slot alongside Vettel on the front row.

After a three-minute high-speed chase, Mr Stockley told his partner, who was in the driver's seat, to ram Mr Smith's vehicle . Although no charges have been filed against the protesters, a police spokesperson said they would be forthcoming.

While the three leaders were out on the spot, Alonso tried to continue after the resulting safety auto, but his McLaren was too damaged and he had to retire.

He was even told at one point not to open too big a gap over Daniel Ricciardo´s pursuing Red Bull for strategic reasons. "I'm trying", he said afterwards.

"By letting people that are following me know, maybe I can encourage a couple of people to do the same thing".

Race engineer: "We have lost data from the auto so we don't know what is going on".

Jolyon Palmer secured his first points of the season for Renault by finishing in sixth, sending a strong message not only to Enstone but also other teams on the grid on the weekend where it was confirmed that he will not be retained by the French manufacturer for 2018.

Belgian rookie Stoffel Vandoorne was seventh for McLaren ahead of Canadian teenager Lance Stroll in the Williams and Romain Grosjean in the Haas.
