Race-car champion, passenger killed in plane crash
According to Speed 51, Christopher died in a crash in Guilford, Conn., while on his way to a race at Riverhead Speedway in Riverhead, N.Y., where the 2008 Whelen Modified Tour champion was scheduled to compete Saturday night.
Christopher, who competed in nine of the 12 NWMT races run so far this year, is now 13th in the 2017 championship standings after this event.
He made six starts in the NASCAR Cup Series, and he earned respect throughout the NASCAR community.
Christopher is considered one of the greatest drivers ever in Northeastern racing history.
The Plainville, Conn., native was known for an aggressive style of racing and the three-tap rule maneuver. The second person on the plane has not been identified.
Police said the 2 people on board a Mooney M20C aircraft were killed when it crashed in North Branford on Saturday.
In 2001, Christopher won the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National championship.
