Earl Brown, told the Daily Beast, "We are aware of the report that a USA citizen believed to be fighting for ISIS surrendered to Syrian Democratic Forces on or about September 12".
An American citizen who sided with the ISIS troops has been handed over by the Syrian army to the U.S. military, according to a Pentagon spokesperson. The U.S. citizen is being legally detained by Department of Defense personnel as a known enemy combatant.
The U.S. citizen fighting with the Islamic State has reportedly been taken into custody.
On Thursday, the chief spokesman for the U.S. military command referred all questions about the news.
He deferred questions to the State Department, which has yet to comment.
USA officials have estimated that 40,000 foreign fighters have flowed to Iraq and Syria to join the Islamic State and other groups since the conflict there began.
USA officials said they are working out what they will do with the man, if he is confirmed as an American.
ISIS is a large movement which has attracted a lot of Western recruits, which has long fueled fear about what happens when they return home, particularly in the cases of those not caught, but who fled the battlefield.
He added, however, that as the two groups converge on the Islamic State position from opposite sides, it will get more hard to stay out of each other's way. Some military spokespeople suggested that the fighter "surrendered" on or around Tuesday.
While a few others have defected or been captured, Hughes said this new fighter could provide valuable intelligence.
The captured terrorist is not the only example for US nationals joining Daesh.
Thousands of foreign fighters from around the globe flocked to Iraq and Syria after Islamic State first captured vast parts of the two countries in 2014 and proclaimed an Islamist caliphate.
A Virginia man, Mohamad Khweis, was convicted in federal court in June of supporting terrorism after he surrendered in early 2016 to Kurdish forces in Iraq who turned him over to the American military there.
"Now we are setting up a civil council parallel to the military council of Deir al-Zor, and this civilian council will run all areas freed from (Islamic State)", he said. "We encourage people not to do that".
