Stephen Paddock before the shooting

Law enforcement authorities on Monday said a hotel security guard was shot by Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock before he opened fire on concertgoers.

Lombardo said Campos' actions still assisted officers in helping to "pinpoint the location of the suspect", but added that the department now has no idea what prompted Paddock's ceasefire.

The lights, along with the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign at the Stip's south end, were dimmed at 10:05 p.m. for 11 minutes - or roughly how long the October 1 shootings lasted.

Campos was shot through the door at 9:59 p.m. - "prior to [Paddock's] shooting to the outside world", Lombardo said.

"Before we were trained to form a perimeter and hope for the best", Lombardo said.

This is what allowed police to find Paddock's room quickly.

The security guard was checking an alert for an open door in another guest's room when he was shot in the leg through the door of Mr Paddock's room.

At a press conference on Monday, Lombardo provided an update into the investigation in which Paddock's motive remains unknown.

It had been thought the gunman stopped shooting at the crowd when distracted by the security guard, who approached his hotel suite. "We know that the vehicle that was down in the parking garage still contained binary explosives", Lombardo said. Authorities previously revealed that the shooter, who killed himself before the police arrived, did not have a criminal record.

"I think they prevented a thousand deaths, and I think it's important for the American public to understand that", Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told "60 Minutes".

In response to rumors circulated on social media, Sheriff Lombardo said there is no evidence to suggest a second shooter exists and added that Paddock was not linked to any "ideologies" that could have influenced the massacre.

Officer Newton said: 'His plan might have been to shoot it out with us because there was a rifle on a bipod near the door, and just the amount of ammunition and weapons he had, he could have held us off for hours'.

Extensive research into the gunman's mental state found no occurrence in his life that may have triggered such a violent turn of events, police say.

Still, Lombardo was clear that another prevailing question remains: Why did Paddock decide to carry out the attack in the first place?
