Assaults on NHS mental health has soared in recent years

NHS mental health staff are assaulted more than 42,000 times a year

United Kingdom research found that treating insomnia with online cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) could in turn help treat mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and paranoia.

FTSE 100 businesses that used the words "mental health" or "wellbeing" more than twice in their annual reports past year raked in up to three times more profit than those that didn't, researchers have found. For some people with physical or mental health conditions or disabilities, a lack of the right support from employers can make finding and keeping a meaningful job hard, while for many people who are unemployed, navigating the current welfare system to find work, claim benefits, or seek suitable support can be an extremely negative experience.

"Lack of awareness about mental health issues has hindered people from seeking help from a specialist".

"We are asking people to talk about mental health, but this must be matched with an ability to listen compassionately and act appropriately".

"However, many older people still feel there is a stigma attached to talking about depression and we need to persuade more people that opening up and talking about their mental health issues is not a sign of weakness", she continued. One in four worry about the harassment they would receive if they were to disclose a mental health concern.

The study also approached managers and employers to assess their view of mental health in the workplace in contrast to the views of their employees. A third of those surveyed by The Hoxby Collective said they suffered mental health problems as a direct result of working rigid hours, including stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia. It emphasises ways to make work more attractive, rather than make unemployment even more punitive.

And according to a separate study, employees feel clear communication that mental health issues are a valid reason for sick leave would make for a more inclusive workplace.

Chris O Sullivan, Head of Business Development at the Charity said: "Healthy workplaces recognise the contribution of employees living with mental health problems and support open disclosure".

By company, Lloyds Banking Group mentioned mental health 13 times in its annual report, followed by Royal Mail which used it ten times, while British Airways' owner International Consolidated Airlines Group (IAG) was among the firms that didn't mention either word.

The Foundation have published a guide ( and are calling on people to use it to make their workplaces more "mentally friendly".
