Grasping a memorable change, the Boy Scouts of Americareported plans to concede young ladies into the Cub Scouts beginning one year from now and to build up another program for more established young ladies utilizing an indistinguishable educational modules from the Boy Scouts.
According to NBC News, the organization has been looking into the possibility of allowing girls to join, and performed a few surveys to see how parents felt about the change.
"This decision is true to the BSA's mission and core values outlined in the Scout Oath and Law", the BSA's Chief Scout Executive Michael Surbaugh said in a statement. Local scouting organizations can choose to have dens for girls and dens for boys. After joining dens, they would be able to continue with the organization and eventually earn the coveted Eagle Scout rank.
Cub Scouts are in first to fifth grade, and a more expanded program for pre-teen and teen girls is expected to be rolled out in 2019, according to the press release. "The values of Scouting - trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind, courageous and reverent, for example - are important for both young men and women", Michael Surbaugh, the group's chief executive, said in a statement. It's also good for the BSA, an organization that's lost a lot of members (and respect) over the past several years for its handling of gay scouts and troop leaders.
In the past, the Girl Scouts have been cool to the idea of admitting girls into the Boy Scouts, citing research which showed that many girls learn best in an all-female environment. Girl Scout officials have suggested the BSA's move was driven partly by financial problems and a need to boost revenue. After consideration, the Church announced it would remain a sponsoring member of the BSA, although it would make its own decisions about who to appoint as scout leaders. "Most are dual-earners and there are more single-parent households than ever before, making convenient programs that serve the whole family more appealing". For some families, scouting programs that welcome both boys and girls could be a welcome convenience.
The Girl Scouts, established in 1912, and the BSA, established in 1910, are among a few noteworthy youth associations in the USA encountering sharp drops in participation lately. These debates, in turn, have led the Boy Scouts - which has about 2.3 million members - to examine long-held policies that date to its founding days over a century ago.
