Oculus Open-sources Rift DK2: Schematics, Firmware, and More All Freely Available

Oculus Makes Rift DK2 Open-Source Ahead Of OC4

Well Oculus Connect 4 has started with a bang, with Mark Zuckerberg making some major announcements straight off the bat. This VR-headset due to arrive in stores next year is a standalone unit.

More details on the Oculus Go are expected in early 2018.

What separates Oculus Go from devices like Gear VR and Oculus Rift is that it doesn't require an external device to power the experience. Facebook VP of VR Hugo Barra even declares it "hands-down the easiest way for developers" to get in with VR. There's no phone or PC required, and it's much more affordable when compared to existing VR headsets on the market. The headset uses new lenses that are meant to reduce flare, coupled with a 2560x1440 "fast-switch" LCD screen that's meant to offer sharp text and visuals. There's also built-in cameras, which use computer vision tech to determine positional tracking.

Nissan made a full-size remote control auto using a PlayStation controller
The controller can send data wirelessly to the vehicle from up to one kilometer away. A Racelogic VBox Motorsport sensor relays speed data to the "remote" driver.

The Rift will be less convenient than the wireless, self-contained VR system Oculus is now promoting, codenamed Santa Cruz.

The new controllers look a lot like the Oculus Touch controllers that work with Rift.

At $200, the Oculus Go is the cheapest way to get into VR if you're starting from zero, but for anyone with a remotely modern smartphone, options like Gear VR or Google Daydream will wind up costing less. For one, it doesn't seem to have inside-out tracking or motion controllers with full tracking.
