Pay Hike For 7.5 Lakh Teachers In Universities, Colleges Cleared By Cabinet

This is more than what 7th Pay Commission had recommended.

Union Cabinet also approved the signing of Memorandum of Cooperation between India and Japan on the Technical Intern Training Program.

"7.51 lakh teachers in universities to get benefits of 7th Pay Commission". HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the decision has been taken to attract good talent to academics and also as a sense of justice for all the teachers who are now in the profession.

Cabinet has approved revision of pay scales for about 8 lakh teachers and other equivalent academic staff.

States will get the Centre's support and all the benefits will be paid from January 1, 2016.

The approval of this pay revision by the cabinet under the chairmanship of PM Modi will enhance the teachers' pay in the range of Rs. 10,400 and Rs. 49,800. The revised pay scale would cost about Rs 9,800 crore to the exchequer.

In an effort to attract talent into academics and improve the quality of education in the country, seven lakh professors, assistant and associate professors in aided colleges and State universities will get the benefits, Mr. Javadekar said. "This revision would register an entry pay growth in the range of 22 per cent to 28 per cent", the statement said.

For the higher education institutions funded by state governments, the revised pay scales will have to adoption by their respective state governments. The salaries of government employees will increase by 20 per cent after this decision.

Prakash Javadekar said in the press conference that additional expense to the tune of Rs 1400 crore for central universities and Rs 8400 crore for state universities and colleges will be needed annually to implement the recommendations of the 7th Pay commission.
