Smoke triggers air quality advisory today
A health advisory was issued Wednesday by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District: "Due to active wildfires and changing wind patterns, air quality could be impacted for many days to come".
Continuing wind and wildfires today may cause residents to experience trouble breathing, coughing, headaches and chest pain.
The San Francisco 49ers issued a statement on Wednesday sharing that the team has joined other Bay Area sports franchises to collectively donate $450,000 to support the North Bay fire relief efforts. "PM2.5 is so small, about 1/30 the width of a human hair, that it can penetrate deep into the lungs". The current situation is a result of very unhealthy air quality from the wildfires in the North Bay and is causing unprecedented levels of air pollution throughout the Bay Area.
As of Tuesday morning 15 people had been killed in the fires and officials said that number was likely to rise. Parents and school administrators must check air quality readings before letting children practice outdoor sports while air quality is unhealthy.
They encourage residents who see or smell smoke in the area to avoid outdoor activity or exercise. Air district officials also asked that people avoid any activities like wood burning, lawn mowing, leaf blowing, driving or barbecuing that can add to the air pollution. It also predicted "unhealthy" for Thursday as well.
You are especially at risk if you are a child, senior, or have respiratory problems. Anyone exposed to poor air quality or wildfire smoke should move inside to an air-conditioned environment.
