Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: Players Who Protest During Anthem Won't Play

The two teams renew one of the league's most storied and historic rivalries. The Packers defeated the Cowboys in a divisional playoff game last season

Dallas owner Jerry Jones said the National Football League can't leave the impression that it tolerates players disrespecting the flag and that any of his Cowboys making such displays won't play.

"If there's anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play", Jones said (via ESPN).

"He's the owner. Either you listen or you don't", Washington Redskins tight end Vernon Davis said Monday. "You understand? If we are disrespecting the flag then we won't play. It's all up to each individual".

He said he chose to address it with reporters after Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers when they asked Jones about Vice President Mike Pence leaving a game in Indianapolis earlier in the day when San Francisco 49ers players took a knee. The league has said it doesn't plan to punish players over anthem protests.

'I don't know about that, ' said Jones, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. Now he can say exactly what he really thinks, which is that any of his players caught acting against injustice during the national anthem in a way that violates Jones's delicate sensibilities will not play for the Cowboys. All of them stood during the anthem, with arms still locked. 'But if there's anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play. OK?

"Again, I believe our team believes in the approach that we take in regards to the anthem and showing respect for the flag and for the national anthem prior to the game", Garrett said. Dak Prescott. Jones said any player who communicated his unwillingness to adhere to the policy would be made inactive for the game, and if a player took action during the anthem, he simply would not play. "He said, 'This could have all been resolved.'" He noted that he and Trump are "friends", but "there are several things we don't agree about'".

Jones said a phone conversation with Trump after the display in Arizona included Trump telling him there was a rule on the books. It's so important if that's what the country is looking at to look at [the protest] differently'. It's a different dialogue.

Jones told Mortensen that President Donald Trump's continued focus on the protests during the anthem reminded him of a section in the NFL's operations manual regarding the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner".

While many criticized Pence for wasting taxpayer money by flying from Las Vegas to Indianapolis, just so he could walk out of the game and head back to the West Coast, apparently the move did have the effect Trump was looking for: keeping the anthem controversy going for another week.
