Presidential election will go on, Kenya's Supreme Court rules

Fresh twirl as court orders IEBC to include Aukot in Oct 26 poll

The House, presided over by Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi, passed the amendment barely a day after Raila Odinga, the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition presidential candidate announced that he and his running mate were withdrawing from a repeat of the presidential elections.

The amendments require the approval of President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose ruling party sought the changes after the Supreme Court nullified Mr Kenyatta's election in August and ordered a new vote.

Following a meeting at the Bomas of Kenya on Wednesday, the electoral commission agreed to comply with the High Court order directing that other candidates who participated in the August presidential poll be allowed to take part in the repeat election.

In Nairobi on Wednesday, Odinga said election officials stalled on actions, "creating an illusion of motion without movement".

Protests have been taking place nearly daily since the decision in a country that still has grim memories of post-election violence, with a disputed 2007 poll prompted politically motivated tribal clashes that left some 1,100 dead.

Unfortunately, things did not improve much under Arena, who has gone 10-2-6 in his second stint with the U.S. Arena, whose contract runs out in July, did not resume his role with U.S.

That judgement stated that if a candidate dies or withdraws from the fresh election, the IEBC must begin presidential nominations from scratch. Protesters threw stones and were met with police tear gas.

Odinga said he was not contesting in the October 26 re-run because he did not expect the process to be fair and transparent, a decision that had plunged Kenya into uncharted waters.

Then on Tuesday, Kenyatta's main challenger Odinga plunged the country into uncharted waters by saying he was pulling out, accusing the election commission (IEBC) of failing to deliver vital reforms.

Tension between Kenyatta's ruling Jubilee Party and Odinga's opposition party have risen since the initial August election.
