Petrol pump dealers call off Oct 13 strike
12 October 2017, 11:46 | Brandon Parsons
The United Petroleum Front, which is an umbrella organisation for the Federation of All-India Petroleum Traders, the All-India Petroleum Dealers Association and the Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers, had earlier threatened that if their demands were not met soon, the dealers would indefinitely stop purchase and sale operations from October 27.
The petrol pump who has earlier chose to go on a nation- wide strike on October 13 has now called off the idea after state oil company threatened to cancel contracts of around 300 major dealers on Wednesday.
Opposition Congress also supported their demand to bring petroleum products under the GST. Petrol pump owners have withdrawn their strike after tough stance taken by oil marketers.
Bordoloi alleged that the guidelines were unjustified and arbitrary in nature, as a result of which dealers were facing harassment during inspection by officials of the oil marketing companies.
"We have agreed on a yearly revision and to now demand a half-year revision is a bit unfair", Singh said, adding that it is well known that petrol and diesel along with natural gas, Aviation turbine Fuel (ATF) and crude oil will be out of GST. Also this is not a professional way of calling a strike.
Bordoloi said that another demand was to do away with the marketing discipline guidelines announced by OMCs, which seek to penalise dealers for shortcomings up to Rs 2 lakh under a zero tolerance policy towards short-changing of customers.
"Our guidelines are in the interest of the consumer and we will not put public into inconvenience during this festive season", he said. S Jaikrishnan, HPCL director (marketing), said dealers' commission, one of the demands, was increased on August 1.
According to the OMCs, certain dealers have managed to manipulate the vending machines at the petrol pumps that were sealed by Weights & Measure Department (W&MD) and cheat the consumers. Hoping that the strike may not happen, OMC officials said luckily hundreds of dealers are coming onto social media saying they are not joining the strike.
