A break-in turned deadly Wednesday when a 91-year-old man died in front of his 99-year-old wife after the couple were tied up by several people who entered their NY home. "He doesn't deserve to die like this", said the victim's niece, Karlene Grose. When police arrived to the scene, they found her husband, Waldiman Thompson, lying on the floor, still tied up and unresponsive. This was the first time I ever saw her screaming. "When can I talk to my husband?"
Waldiman and Ethlin Brumley Thompson were at their ground-floor apartment in Bedford Stuyvesant Wednesday afternoon when at least two masked, armed men stormed in, tied them up and put pillow cases over their heads, according to sources. NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Kemper said police received the 911 call at about 3:50PM. They say they're waiting for Mrs. Thompson to be released from the hospital so they can return to the home to determine what, if anything, was stolen.
The suspects were also caught on surveillance footage by a nearby bodega. "They tied him up and tied me up too, '" he said. Police say that so far there have been no signs of forced entry.
Delroy said he asked detectives to "grill him to the ultimate".
"I thought it was a gunshot initially". It's possible that the intruders knew the couple, since the invasion does not appear to be random, they said.
The elderly couple owned the brownstone and collected rent from three tenants in the building. While the thieves rummaged through the home, the frail Ethlin somehow escaped her bonds and ran from the house.
"My father wanted to come to Florida, but my stepmother would not accept it", Delroy said. According to her brother Garfied Bringle, Ethlin Thompson was known to give out money to people in need.
He also added that Ethlin had mentioned that she had lost the key to her lockbox and was planning to call a locksmith. The Brooklyn Borough President is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. "This godly and big-hearted couple suffered a truly godless and heartless attack that has struck a blow deep in the soul of Brooklyn. Their tragedy is a tragedy for us all".
