The parents of Canadian national Joshua Boyle lauded Pak Army soldiers for their rescue operation that led to the recovery of their son, held hostage by Taliban in 2012.

The army did not name the family, but Canadian Joshua Boyle and his United States wife Caitlan Coleman were kidnapped while backpacking in Afghanistan in 2012.

The couple refused to immediately board a US-bound jet over concerns about the husband's past links to a former Guantanamo Bay inmate.

The Toronto Star reported that Boyle told his parents that he was in the trunk of the kidnappers' vehicle with his wife and children when they were rescued by Pakistani forces.

But one USA official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was no indication that the hostages had been in Afghanistan in the days before they were freed, contrary to the Pakistani account.

They were freed Thursday in a mission carried out by Pakistani forces based on intelligence from United States authorities.

"The success underscores the importance of timely intelligence sharing and Pakistan's continued commitment towards fighting this menace through cooperation between two forces against a common enemy", the Pakistan Army statement said.

The last time anyone heard from Coleman, the York County native spoke of the "Kafkaesque nightmare" she and her husband had been trapped in for almost five years.

Ireland to play Pakistan in first test next year
A set of playing conditions for four-day Tests is set to be drawn up by ICC management in coming weeks. Pakistan are now seventh in the Test rankings but were top of the pile as recently as a year ago .

A US national security official, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, said USA officials had planned on moving the family out of Pakistan on a USA transport plane, but at the last minute Boyle would not get on, the official said. Some U.S. officials say Pakistani safe havens have helped prolong the conflict. "We stand ready to support them as they begin their healing journey", Freeland said. It was revealed Thursday that Coleman had a third child.

The two vanished after setting off in the summer of 2012 for a journey that took them to Russian Federation, the central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and then to Afghanistan.

The media wing of Pakistan Army announced on Thursday that they rescued five foreigners held captive by Taliban some five years back.

The Haqqani network operates on both sides of the porous Afghan-Pakistani border but senior militants have acknowledged they moved a major base of operations to Kurram agency in the tribal areas.

Pakistan's military on Thursday recovered five foreign hostages captured from Afghanistan in 2012.

The Afghan Taliban are also believed to be holding American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weekes, both professors at the American University of Afghanistan, who were dragged from their vehicles in Kabul by armed men in August previous year. It says the rescue was made possible by intelligence provided by Washington.

They most recently appeared in a hostage video released in June this year.
