Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Release Reinterpretation of John Carpenter's Classic Halloween Theme for Friday the
Carpenter has mostly stepped away from filmmaking in the last decade or so too, and in recent years has focused on composing and touring his own original music. All of my favorite movies are playing on television, I can get my favorite candy in bulk and the dead return to torment the living. In the spirit of the season and the day, Nine Inch Nails'Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have released a cover version of John Carpenter's famous Halloween theme song.
The track is lifted from Carpenter's "Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998", which will be out on 20 October.
According to an article that appeared in Pitchfork, Reznor discussed the impact the film Halloween had on him. We left the theater forever changed. We were damaged and scarred...and that theme stuck firmly in our heads.
The cover is part of a 13-track album featyring remakes of classic film soundtracks called Anthology: Movie Themes 1974-1998, and it is being released by the grandfather of horror, John Carpenter. Here, prolific musicians Reznor and Ross make it their own in a twisted, tantalizing way.
Reznor and Ross recreate the atmosphere Carpenter originally achieved when he penned the theme 39 years ago. Halloween III was his attempt to turn the series into an anthology that told original stories set at Halloween, but when that film received major backlash for lacking Michael Myers he declined further involvement, up until this new movie. The unsettling theme gives such a feeling of foreboding doom. When asked about his involvement with the movie he says, "I am an executive producer and it looks clear to me that I've made a deal to do the music".
By the way, Carpenter is a fan this new update: "Moody and dark, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross" version of "Halloween' does wonderful justice to the original", Carpenter said. You can catch John Carpenter now on tour performing all your favorite hits in a city near you. Let the other trick'r'treaters know what you think in the comment section below.
