President Trump formally announced his nomination Thursday of top White House official Kirstjen Nielsen for secretary of homeland security. Nielsen, 45, now serves as deputy to Chief of Staff John Kelly, whom she worked under when he headed the DHS prior to taking the position at the White House.
'Kirstjen plays a crucial role in managing White House functions and coordinating with federal agencies and with Melania, who has got - really, she's done some great work for a lot of different groups, ' Trump said at a ceremony in the East Room.
Though the White House confirmed her nomination, the president gave an on-camera announcement Thursday afternoon.
In a statement, Senator Ron Johnson said, "Ms. Nielsen's long history of service with the Department, her cybersecurity experience and her tenure serving with General John Kelly would serve her well as the next Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security".
On Wednesday, she greeted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau to the White House in a jaw-dropping grey pinstripe pantsuit outfit. "There, she quickly reinforced a sterling reputation as a dedicated leader whose number one priority is always the safety and security of our country and our citizens, not politics or ideology".
Among others under consideration for the DHS post were Energy Secretary Rick Perry and acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke.
Duterte gives PDEA sole authority to conduct anti-drug ops
It was suspended in January amid controversy over rogue cops' involvement in the kidnap-slay of a South Korean businessman. PDEA spokesman Derreck Carreon said the agency had about 2,000 personnel and funds for only 200 new agents next year.
She'll be the first who formerly worked at the agency.
Prior to the Trump administration, Nielsen worked in DHS as a senior legislative policy director for Transportation and Security Administration under President George W. Bush.
Senate Democrats may press Nielsen on that point, especially as protection expires for some 800,000 "Dreamers" who were brought to the United States illegally as children.
Trump urged the Senate to look at Nielsen's qualifications, calling for a quick confirmation.
The Department of Homeland Security was created in the wake of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.
