EA will pay $151 million upfront in cash, followed by $164 million in long-term equity in restricted stock units to employees over the next four years, and then there are additional cash considerations that will be paid out based on performance up to $140 million. In a statement, EA announced that it is now working with Respawn on a new Titanfall game, a Star Wars title, and a VR title.
EA announced today that the company has purchased Respawn Entertainment for $315 million. Development is going well and we have a great relationship with Lucasfilm.
"Our longtime partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world", EA CEO Andrew Wilson said in a statement.
Respawn CEO Vince Zameplla told GamesBeat in an interview, "We have worked together a long time from the inception of the studio. This is a great next step for Respawn, EA, and our players".
Patriots claim TE Martellus Bennett off waivers
For starters, three of Bennett's seven touchdowns last season came in one game (Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns ). In claiming Bennett, the Patriots inherit the three-year, $21 million contract that he had signed with the Packers.
He also promised the games Respawn is now working on "are continuing as planned", and the deal wouldn't lead to any job cuts, which is often a hazard of these big deals.
The latter information is according to sources at Kotaku, who note that the upcoming Star Wars title and Titanfall 3 are in the pipeline for the company. The first game, Titanfall, was published by EA in 2014, and received global recognition with more than 75 top awards. Everyone knows Respawn as the studio behind the Titanfall series but before that a good number of people, including the founders, helped launch Infinity Ward and the Call of Duty series with Activision.
"This decision was made because it's the best way to get Respawn the resources, support, and knowledge we need to achieve our long term goals", the blog post continued.
