Congratulations, Sex Probably Won't Give You a Heart Attack

13 November 2017, 06:40 | Lena Norman

'Heart-stopping' sex is rare, but it does happen -- and mostly to men

Fewer than one in five men who suffer cardiac arrest during sex survive — because their partners do not know CPR

"The findings are reassuring", for people with heart disease concerned that sex might be unsafe, said senior author Sumeet Chugh, a cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles.

Out of these only 34 were during or within an hour of having sex, and 32 of those were men, who were already taking drugs for heart conditions.Patients who experienced sudden cardiac arrest related to sexual activity also had a higher rate of ventricular fibrillation/tachycardia than those who did not. We believe very strongly that our audience should have an opportunity to discuss and debate events in our world, however, we have not been able to moderate the comments as well as we would like. Therefore, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute say that older men, black people, and individuals with a diagnosis of coronary heart disease or diabetes are most at risk.

This, they said, explains the low survival rates from those who collapse in bed. Also, nearly all cases occurred among men, namely 32 of them.

The new findings are part of a 16-year study of heart risk factors involving about a million people living in and around Portland.

Other heart experts said they weren't surprised by the results.

Sexual activity was associated in fewer than 1% of the cases.

Dr. Martha Gulati, chief of cardiology for the University of Arizona College of Medicine, said, "Although a lot of us think sex requires an intense level of activity, even in the most extreme situations it's not as intense as people imagine it". Later the scientist asked that whether sex can be called unsafe for the heart patients and the answer come as to be on hold. Well, the study concludes that there are rare chances that cardiac arrest can trigger someone during sexual intercourse. In the study, researchers take a look at the data of around 5,000 to 10,000 people and only five or six of them have a cardiac arrest.

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when an electrical malfunction causes the heart to stop beating.

"If you ask me why that is, I just don't know", Chugh said.

The research was presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association.

Yet only one-third of those witnesses in the study attempted CPR, which suggests a continuing need for public education on the importance of CPR, the study authors noted.
