Hate Crimes in US Increased by Five Percent in 2016

FBI: Hate crimes went up last year in the US
Nearly 20 percent of racial hate crimes during 2016 were committed due to "anti white bias" showing a 15 percent increase in anti white hate crimes since 2015, according to the FBI Data. Utah Highway Patrol saw the highest number of race-related hate crimes with 10 incidents reported.
Six hate crimes were related to religion, while five were associated with sexual orientation.
"There's a risky disconnect between the rising problem of hate crimes and the lack of credible data being reported", said ADL CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt.
There were also 105 incidents against transgender people, a 44 percent increase compared to 2015.
The FBI's annual hate crime statistics, released Monday, showed there were 6,121 hate crime incidents in 2016, up 4.6 percent from 5,850 in 2015. But the number of anti-black crimes remained about even with the number reported in 2015.
"If law-enforcement agencies fail to document the true extent of hate crimes against our communities", he added, "our nation will have a hard time mobilizing the political will and resources necessary to prevent and combat the problem".
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the Justice Department is now engaging with state and local leaders and to find ways to better prevent and prosecute hate crimes.
"The Department of Justice is committed to ensuring that individuals can live without fear of being a victim of violent crime based on who they are, what they believe, or how they worship", Sessions said in a statement.
There were eight reports of religion motivated hate crimes past year but zero reports of gender motivated hate crimes. Incidents targeting Muslims rose 19 percent from 257 to 307 incidents.
"There's a risky disconnect between the rising problem of hate crimes and the lack of credible data being reported", said Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt, who called for an "all-hands-on-deck approach" to address underreporting.
The FBI report, which collects information on the offenders in the hate crimes tallied previous year, found that the largest share - 46 percent - were white. "They not only hurt one victim, but they also intimidate and isolate a victim's whole community and weaken the bonds of our society".
